Most Popular Dog Breeds 2021

Updated: Dec 7, 2021

Over the years, dogs have become one of the most beloved pets in America. The love, companionship, and support from a dog are like no other. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society, it is estimated that 48 million American households own a dog. During the year 2020, it is estimated that dog ownership increased by 11%. The variety of dog breeds to choose from is vast, ranging from a chihuahua to a bullmastiff. Although, over time, some precious pups have taken the top position in people’s hearts.

According to the American Kennel Club, in the 1900s, the top dog breed was the collie. People were loving them for their loyalty, gentleness, and long fur coat. In the 1960s, poodles took the top spot. America loved these designer pups for their patient and playful attitudes, along with their curly fur. During the 1980s, cocker spaniels fought their way to the top. The world fell in love with their gentle and loving personality along with their adorable faces.

However, for the last 29 years, labrador retrievers have stolen the top spot for America’s most adored dog breed. The labrador retriever originated in Newfoundland during the 1500s and was created to be named St. John’s Water-Dog. These pups historically helped fishermen. Labrador retrievers would collect ropes, fishing nets, and recover fish from the icy sea. In modern society, labrador retrievers are hunters, show dog competitors, rescue dogs, service animals, and much more. Labrador retrievers are known for their intelligence, friendliness and are highly trainable. Their patience and kindness make them great for other children and pets. With all these qualities and more, labrador retrievers have been crowned Top Dog for another year.

Overall, there are hundreds of dog breeds with a range of qualities. Maybe you like designer dogs, like a poochon! Maybe you like small dogs like Yorkshire terriers or pomeranians. 7th grader, Brianna Frias, says she likes “Doberman pinschers because they have cat ears, are very alert, and are big dogs. I also like pomeranians because they are fluffy and small, and are always ready to fight.” No matter what, you will always find a four-legged friend that is perfect for you.
