LA's Hard Work is About to Pay Off

Starting next month, and lasting until 2028, Los Angeles is going to have a lot of big opportunities. After years of working to coordinate important events, they are occurring in rapid succession.

2022: The 2022 Super Bowl is being played right here at SoFi stadium in a few weeks, and there is a lot of excitement around it. Exactly how much money does the host city make you may ask? Well, one study says that it can bring in $300 - $400 million1, while the NFL claims it can bring in up to $500 million2! So let’s assume that it brings in 400 million dollars to LA. In 2020, Los Angeles made $999.98 billion, which means that this 1-hour football game will make 0.0004% of LA’s income per year. It may not sound like a lot, but, in truth, it’s quite a bit.

2023: The 2023 College Football National Championship will also be played at SoFi Stadium for the first time at this location. SoFi stadium only opened in 2020, but has been a jewel for Los Angeles sports and has brought a lot of national and international attention to the area. The last time LA hosted the national championship was in 2014 when most middle schoolers were 4-6 years old! Predictions are that the host city of the National Championship will get about $150 million3.

2026: The World Cup is coming to the US! The World Cup is the biggest international soccer competition in the world, and in 2026, it is being hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Of those countries, there are key venues selected where games will be played, and the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles is one of those. In 1994, when the US hosted the World Cup, Los Angeles made $630 million4, and I think this time the profit could be even greater! If we combine that with the money from the Super Bowl and the National Championship, that would bring our grand total up to 1.18 trillion dollars, from 3 sports competitions!

2028: Finally, in 2028, Los Angeles will host the Olympics! This is the oldest sporting event in the world - a huge competition involving over 35 different sports and 400 different events! It is considered a huge honor to host the Olympics and the fact that Los Angeles will be is quite exciting. It is also a big money-maker. Los Angeles was famous for making an extraordinarily big profit in the 1984 Olympics, which led to more and more money being made each Olympic Cycle. In Rio de Janeiro (2016), they made $2,900,000,000 (2.9 billion dollars) off of television revenue alone. Although infrastructure is a big concern, the United States is right next to the ocean for water sports, has the Colosseum, and dozens of other venues available5.

Overall, Los Angeles could make 1.8 trillion dollars between the Super Bowl, National Championship, and World Cup, and has a big opportunity for the 2028 Olympics. It’s an ex
