On January 6th, while Congress held a joint session to certify the electoral vote, a mob of Trump supporters made their way toward the US Capitol. Some had intentions to raid the Capitol and assassinate our leaders. As the rioters grew closer and closer, they continued pushing the Capitol Police back, and while the security aspect is a whole debate in itself, we can all agree that the police did not do a good job in controlling the situation. First, the mob got past the 150 feet barriers, moving the police until they had control of the steps on all sides of the United States Capitol.
While this was happening, Congress continued to debate if Arizona’s electoral votes were accurate and regular in form. As the mob advanced onto the front steps and began breaking into the United States Capitol, its surrounding buildings were under lockdown. The rioters made their way to the rotunda and toward the House chambers. Many Senators and members of The House of Representatives were evacuated but some were left to fear for their lives. A woman attempting to reach the House chambers was shot by security and later died. After twenty minutes, all members of the House, Senate, their staff, and reporters were safely evacuated to an undisclosed location.
As the police and security tried to get the capital under control, many made their way to places no member of the public is ever allowed. Numerous rioters made their way to the offices. One man entered Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s office and left a note that said, “Nancy, Bigo was here you b****.” Others made their way to the Senate chambers where some members of the mob sat in the same chair where Mike Pence sat just hours before. According to a CNN reporter, some just wanted to use the bathroom and smoke weed. After five hours, the police were able to drive everyone out of the Capitol, and Congress was able to return and certify the electoral votes for Joe Biden.
OPINION: You can call it whatever you want: an insurrection, a coup, or sedition, but this was a domestic terrorist attack. Citizens of the United States committed a terrorist attack on a building that has not been invaded since the War of 1812. And it was all fueled by the, now former, President of the United States. All he did after he spoke was watch this unfold on TV. And even when he released a video calling on these terrorists to go home, he said they were special people that he loved. This is the same president who, when Neo-Nazis came out of the bushes in Charlottesville, said there were very fine people on both sides. And while Twitter locked his account for twelve hours and Facebook and Instagram banned him for the rest of his presidency, that is not enough. The Vice President and the cabinet needs to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the president from office. Because when someone aids and abets a terrorist attack, they are unfit to be President of the United States of America.
UPDATE: By the time you are reading this, Joe Biden has been sworn in as president. While Trump wasn’t evicted by the 25th Amendment, he was impeached again by the House.
