Powerful Women in Politics

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

After the heartbreaking death of Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, it has become even more important to recognize the women who strive to create remarkable careers for themselves in a male-dominated field like politics. The stigma that surrounds women working in politics, and having powerful jobs in general, creates a difficult work environment for females. This is one of the many reasons we must acknowledge and appreciate the women who spend their careers working hard to be treated as equal to their male counterparts. According to an article by CNN, women are less likely to run for office because they have to do much more to prove themselves than men. This also goes for most fields of work. Here are four admirable female politicians who fight for change, despite the challenges.

  1. Kamala Harris, the current vice president-elect, has been breaking barriers for women in politics since the beginning of her career. Not only is she the first woman to be elected as Vice President of the United States, but she is also the first black and South Asian woman to be elected as Vice President. She serves as a role model for many young women of all ethnicities throughout the world and continuously shows people that your dreams are attainable and can be accomplished no matter your gender or race. She is someone to be admired.

  2. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known as AOC, is a political icon amongst young generations. She fights for the abolishment of ICE, the Green New Deal, and Medicare for all, topics that many young people are extremely passionate about. She is admired across the U.S. for her resilience against the abuse she has received from her male colleagues. She is an amazing example of a powerful woman who continues to fight for what is right, despite the obstacles many women face in the workplace.

  3. Elizabeth Warren is a former law professor, elected into the Senate in 2012, and is largely known for her campaign in the midterm presidential election. Although she is not as widely known amongst younger generations, she is definitely an inspiration. Warren is more focused on the economic side of things, the side that most young people are less drawn to. However, that does not mean that her beliefs and engagement in important issues are not significant for people of all ages. Warren fights to take the power away from the wealthy and help the working class, create a fair tax plan for the wealthy, and support Medicare for all.

  4. Lastly, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Before her passing, she was a major advocate for gender equality and women’s reproductive rights, two topics that are extremely prevalent and important. She has created opportunities and molded a path for young female lawyers all over the world. If it weren’t for her, our society would not be nearly as well developed as it is. RBG is an icon and should be recognized for her work amongst all genders and ages.

These four politicians are not nearly all the women that should receive recognition and admiration for their work. In this time of change and development in our country, it is important to learn from these courageous females and take the necessary steps to create change within our own communities.
